Using Dance in Therapy

Have you ever seen a kid break into a spontaneous dance move, maybe in the middle of the grocery store or during a family dinner? That’s not just adorable—it’s super beneficial too! Let’s talk about just a few of the amazing benefits of kids dancing.

But before we start, It’s important to talk about Adaptive Dance. What makes Adaptive Dance different? It’s a wonderful way to ensure that everyone is included. Adaptive Dance ensures that every participant can twirl, leap, and express themselves, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities. Basic dance technique is still taught, but possibly at a slower pace, or with the additional assistance that someone may require.

Here’s the good news - ANY type of dance, whether adaptive or traditional, is healthy and therapeutic in so many ways.

First off, dancing is a workout! When kids dance, they’re not just having fun; they’re also getting a fantastic exercise. It helps improve their coordination, balance, and flexibility. Plus, it’s a sneaky way to get them to be active without the dreaded “E” word... exercise! Also, Dancing is great at building endurance. All of these skills are so important in development and are often targeted in sessions, such as in physical or occupational therapy. For dance to check several boxes, it becomes a great strategy for all kids!

Want some more good news? Dancing serves as a remarkable antidote to stress. As you sway your hips, wiggle your toes, or attempt a viral dance you saw on TikTok, your brain initiates the release of endorphins. Dancing has the magical ability to whisk away worries; it becomes challenging to fret over tasks like homework or chores when you are engrossed in perfecting your moonwalk. So, when anxiety looms, crank up the music and dance freely, embracing the moment as if no one is watching.

Additionally, dancing fosters healthy social connections. Whether it's ballet, hip-hop, ballroom, or The Cha-Cha Slide, the variety of dance styles ensures that there is something for everyone, making it a versatile and enjoyable activity to incorporate into daily life. Dancing at home is a sure-fire way to not just get the kids up and moving, but to watch the parents bust a move (or two).

So, the next time you see your child grooving to their favorite song, join in the fun! Dancing is a magical mix of fitness, creativity, and pure joy. Let’s keep those little feet moving and those big smiles beaming. Dance on, kiddos! 🎉🕺💃✨
